Context
Houston Landing launched in February 2023 as one of the most heavily capitalized nonprofit local news startups ever attempted, with over $20 million in seed funding from the Houston Endowment ($7.5 million), Arnold Ventures ($4 million), Kinder Foundation ($7.5 million), American Journalism Project ($1.5 million) and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation ($250,000). The project emerged from a two-year study, led by the American Journalism Project, which found that many Houstonians did not feel they had access to a trusted source for deeply reported stories affecting their daily lives. By April 2025, roughly two years after launch, the board voted to cease operations and lay off all employees. As one staffer summarized the failure, the organization tried to be too much, too fast, for too many people.
